Interviewing Skills Training

A number of years ago, a mother told me of her son’s experience on his first interview for private school. It was such a horrible and stressful experience that he did not want to go on another interview. When he got in the car, he welled up in tears! The parents did not know what to do. Even though they wanted their son to attend a private school, they certainly did not wish to put him through this anxiety.

“Mrs. Millet said there would be good and bad interviewers. She was right! Because of my training, I was prepared and knew what to do. I got my first choice of schools.”

Just to hear this story was painful for me so I told the mother to bring her son to my office and I would do what I could to help him. That one-on-one time with him made all the difference. He went into the remaining interviews with confidence and received acceptance to the school of his choice. Don’t you just love a happy ending?

However, for me it was just the beginning. Since then, I have developed a method of training young people for the school interviews that empowers them to handle the situation with grace and confidence. Applying for private school can be a grueling process. Much information is needed and the paper work seems endless and time consuming. Finally, all is done and the interview dates have been set. Your child may look good on paper but will he/she make the cut in the interview?

An interview can be stressful at any age, but when you are in middle or high school and you don’t know what to expect, it can be stressful for some young people and gut wrenching for others. So much is at stake and the closer the interview date, the more pressure the child feels.

In the two hour session with Mrs. Millet (Me-a) your child will learn:

  • The verbal and psychological interview process
  • The proper etiquette for an interview
  • The 13 most common questions asked
  • How to answer those questions
  • The three most important things an interviewer is looking for
  • How to make a good impression on a bad interviewer

With this knowledge, students feel more secure and confident. The vast majority of students tutored by Mrs. Millet are accepted by their first and second choice of schools. She empowers each student to his or her “Secret Advantage.” This advantage is very powerful and has been known to be the deciding factor in granting acceptance!
